Synth LibraryNYC: Sonic Technology Exploration with Riley Wong and Janus Rose
Synthesizers can be intimidating to beginners, but they don’t have to be! If we look past all the buttons, knobs and blinking lights, learning the fundamentals can make synthesis technology much simpler, giving us a clearer view of how to make all kinds of sounds. In this workshop, we will demystify the synthesizer by breaking down its core components, revealing the raw building blocks we can use to create any electronic sound - No experience or music theory knowledge required.
About The Teacher(s): Janus Rose is producer, dj and synthesist with over 15 years of experience creating and performing electronic music. Her practice ranges from modular synth and live hardware performance to dj sets featuring club-forward, futuristic sounds. A veteran of NYC’s electronic music underground, she is the host of SOFT_RESET, a local party for experimental bass and club music.
Riley Wong is a sound artist, performer, organizer, and independent researcher based in Brooklyn, NY. They perform improvised electro-acoustic ambient music influenced by classical contemporary, free jazz, and experimental electronic, and informed by their piano and flute training, work in the synthesizer industry, and involvement in Brooklyn’s queer experimental music scene. Wong is a co-organizer of Synth Library NYC, which offers free rentals of electronic music gear with emphasis on femmes and QTBIPOC. They also host tender alchemy, an experimental and ambient music night for deep listening.
